Project Canal

Understand your medical bill, spot a problem, and know what to do next — before you overpay or miss an appeal deadline.

PRODUCT STATUS

Canal runs today as an iOS app with manual claim entry and a rule-based analysis engine. The web version is in development. Early access opens to a small first group.

“I got an EOB. What does it mean, and do I need to do anything?”

That is the one question Canal is built to answer properly. Everything else comes later.

Who it is for

Canal is built for the person holding the paperwork, not for a billing department.

People with a confusing bill

You were treated, a document arrived, and the numbers on it do not agree with each other.

People who were denied

A claim came back refused, and the letter does not explain whether that is final.

People managing care for someone else

Parents, partners, and carers handling paperwork that is not their own.

What it does

Deterministic maths for anything that affects money, plain language for everything else.

Translates the claim

Billed, allowed, insurer paid, and the part that is actually yours — separated and named.

Flags the problem

Denials, likely overpayments, missing information, and charges that look wrong.

Shows the deadline

If a claim was denied, Canal shows the appeal window and what to gather before it closes.

Tracks your accumulators

Where you stand against your deductible and out-of-pocket maximum, updated per claim.

Links care to claims

A visit, and the claims that came from it, in one timeline.

Prepares an appeal packet

A checklist and a draft you can take to the insurer — not a promise about the outcome.

How your information is handled

Health data is the most sensitive thing a person can hand over. Canal is built accordingly.

You control what you add

Nothing is imported from your insurer unless you connect it yourself, later.

Never used to train on you

Your name, date of birth, and member ID are never sent in an AI prompt.

You can delete it

Export or delete your data at any time, and every access to it is logged.

Project Canal explains insurance and billing information. It does not give medical advice, does not guarantee an appeal outcome, and is not a substitute for speaking to your insurer or a clinician.

1. Project Canal currently exists as an iOS application with manual claim entry and a rule-based analysis engine. The web version described on this page is in development and is not yet available. 2. Capabilities described are the intended scope of the product and may change before release. 3. The privacy practices described reflect how Canal is being designed. They are a statement of intent, not a warranty. 4. Canal does not guarantee the outcome of any appeal. Amounts, deadlines, and balances are calculated from information you enter and should always be checked against the documents sent by your insurer.
